Nystatin is a polyene antifungal antibiotic which interferes with the permeability of the cell membrane of sensitive fungi by binding to sterols chiefly ergosterol. Its main action is against Candida spp, it is also effective against Aspergillus spp. Coccidioides immitis, Cryptococcus neoformans, Histoplasma capsulatum, Blastomyces dermatitidis and other yeast and fungi.
Nystatin is poorly absorbed from the gastro-intestinal tract.
Nystatin is an antifungal antibiotic active against a wide range of yeasts and fungi, including Candida albicans. Nycostat® Lozenges are used for the treatment of Oesophageal Candidiasis.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION:
For the treatment of Oesophageal Candidiasis:
Adults and Children: One lozenge to be sucked slowly four times a day for 7-14 days.
No food or drink should be taken for five minutes before or one hour after taking the lozenge. The lozenge should be sucked slowly and retained in the mouth for as long as possible. If symptoms persist after the initial 14 days of treatment with lozenges, appropriate micro-biologic studies (e.g. Potassium hydroxide microscopic mounts and/or cultures) should be repeated to confirm the diagnosis of candidiasis and rule out other pathogens before initiating another course of nystatin therapy.
CONTRA -INDICATIONS AND WARNINGS:
It is important not to interrupt or discontinue treatment unless otherwise instructed by the physician.
